Luis Nieto Dickens December 07 2016 Women and Queer Identified DJs The NYC electronic music scene is thriving and full of talent from across the globe, here you can find the most refreshing and diverse DJs! For about a decade and a half I have been going out to clubs to listen to DJs create unique atmospheres and have experienced the energy of people losing themselves in dance. I’ve come to appreciate all the hard work that these curators have put into their craft. For some it starts as a way to be part of something, but for many it is the love of electronic music that drives them. They jump on the decks and make people forget everything as they give in to the beat. Working in nightlife as a photographer I have had the pleasure of witnessing unique and inspiring performances by these artists. It is of the utmost importance to highlight their work and with this piece I hope to shine a light on them and their contribution to music culture. I aim to generate an ongoing directory where promoters can access new and upcoming talent as well as artists who are established within the community, with an emphasis on women and queer identified individuals. Having lived in multiple DIY venues & cities on the East Coast the past decade, she has cultivated a string of various performance projects, namely experimental, noise, & industrial-leaning synth pop. In 2011, motiv-a was born as a techno project. A year later, she started DJing & refining her live hardware sets at clubs & warehouse raves. Her sets range from psychedelic/textural techno, melodic ambient to harder, EBM-tinged dance music. One of the best experiences I’ve ever had! Thanks for the list, I’m going to keep it religiously xx Abra Willows that’s like, a list of all the worst things a human can possibly be! Julien Lacheray There are no worst or best sexual preferences. Ushka hi Luis! I would love to be added to this list. As a queer, dark skinned south Asian femme who has been djing in nyc for 8 years and is in collaboration with several people on this list, I often feel invisibilized and would love for that to not be the case. http://www.djushka.com – Ushka SoundCloud.com/djushka – if there’s a possibility of being added, I would appreciate that as I’ve been on the scene for a while. I realize it’s photos of folks you’ve photographed but invisibility and lack of inclusion remains a norm every time lists like this are created. Many thanks for understanding. Ushka Hey! Glad that this list is aimed to be an ongoing directory of queer and women djs in NYC. I’ve a queer, south asian dj who has been spinning in NYC for 8 years. I’ve deejayed with a lot of the folks on this list and regularly spin at parties like Papi Juice, etc. I’ve made mixes for The Fader, Discwoman, Boiler Room, etc. I’d love to be added to this list — especially as a queer, dark skinned femme who often gets invisibilized in spaces. Would it be possible to add me? Im at @ty_ushka on instagram; http://www.thanushka.com; soundcloud.com/djushka — many thanks.
